Prerequisites: Technical Physics, bachelor degree
Target skills and knowledge: This lecture provides the following knowledge and skills:
- Knowledge of two-phase heat transfer processes: boiling and condensation
- Knowledge of heat and mass transfer process with moist air
- Knowledge of passive enhanced heat transfer
- Knowledge of nanofluid properties and use for cooling purposes
- Skill on design and thermal analysis of different types of heat exchangers: tubular, plate, fin and tube, compact, etc.
Examination methods: The examination of the expected knowledge, understanding and skills is carried out by means of two tests to be dealt with in two days.
- Written test for the design of a practical case study (component) or a heat exchanger.
- Oral test: discussion about the topics of the course, in order to verify the level of the knowledge and understanding.
Assessment criteria: The check of the acquired knowledge and skills concerns the following aspects.
- Level of acquired theoretical knowledge of heat and mass transfer processes.
- Skill in applying the theoretical knowledge for the design and the thermal analysis of heat exchangers.
- Degree of autonomy in understanding and solving thermal problems.
- Ability and rigorousness in analysing and presenting the different items.
- Ability in the use of technical instrumentation and software.
Course unit contents: The specific contents of the course may be summarised in the following items:
- Two-phase heat transfer processes: boiling and condensation.
- Heat and mass transfer processes of moist air.
- Passive enhanced heat transfer techniques: surface treatment, enhanced surfaces, insert and turbulator, mini and micro-channels.
- Nanofluid properties and application for cooling components and systems.
- Thermal analysis and design of the different type of heat exchangers: tubular, plate, fin and tube, compact, etc.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course includes the following activities:
- Theoretical study of heat and mass transfer processes.
- Application of the criterion for the design and the thermal analysis of heat exchangers by numerical exercises.
