Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic metallurgical knowledge.
Target skills and knowledge: Acquisition of the basic metallurgical, technological and technical-economic knowledge on the main kinds of plants and processes adopted in metals and alloys production. Both ferrous and non-ferrous fields are approached and presented.
Examination methods: Oral examination, with possibility of performing an intermediate written test
Assessment criteria: The evaluation will be based on the understanding of the topics presented during the Course, on the acquisition of concepts and methodologies shown, and on the capability of using them in an autonomous and proper way.
Course unit contents: Methods for extraction and elaborations of metals. Iron-making and steel-making processes and plants (primary production of steel; EAF steel-making; plants for steel refinement; continuous casting; productivity in steel-making industry; cast iron foundry; costs related to production of steel and cast iron components; innovative iron- & steel-making processes; rolling processes for steels). Processes and plants for Aluminium alloys production (wrought and casting Aluminium alloys; gravity, low- and high- pressure diecasting processes; innovative foundry processes; confronto tecnico-economico tra i differenti processi). Leghe d'oro (leghe da lavorazione plastica; leghe da fonderia; processi di microfusione). Leghe a base titanio, magnesio, rame, zinco e piombo: aspetti tecnico-economici dei principali processi produttivi
