Syllabus
Prerequisites: Sistemi di Trasporto (Transport Systems).
Target skills and knowledge: The basic concepts necessary to understand transport planning activities in general; a solid understanding of the relationships between technical activities and decision-making environment in the context of transport planning processes; a range of specific transport policies applicable within transport planning processes;
knowledge of some of the methods and models commonly used to support transport policy decisions.
Examination methods: Oral examination on the entire set of contents, that may include both questions on general issues/theoretical aspects and the request to carry out an exercise.
Assessment criteria: Students' preparation is evaluated on the basis of the following aspects:
in-depth comprehension of the topics covered by the course, and ability to present them clearly and correctly; ability to apply with critical judgement the methodologies presented in the course.
Course unit contents: TRANSPORT PLANNING PROCESSES IN GENERAL:
Introduction, basic concepts and definitions.
The contemporary context of transport planning.
Relationships between technical level and decision-making environment in transport planning.
Strategic, tactical and operational transport planning.
Transport planning as a process.
Activities and policy instruments of transport planning.

METHODS AND MODELS FOR TRANSPORT PLANNING:
Introduction and review of the supply-demand-equilibrium modelling framework.
Topological representation of transport networks.
Performance functions of individual network elements.
Transport demand models.
Analytical formulation of the equilibrium problem in transport networks.
Models and algorithms for the computation of flows in transport networks.
Direct estimation of transport demand.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Traditional classroom teaching.
