Syllabus
Prerequisites: No special prerequisites are required for exams taken, but knowledge of contemporary history and of the history of political thought is assumed.
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to make students acquire the methodological tools and the analytical capacity, to understand the historical sense, the argumentative structure and the philosophical implications of the theses supported on fundamental themes of political and social reflection.
Examination methods: The assessment will take place in oral form, as an interview on the topics of the course.
For the students it will be possible to make oral expositions and / or prepare essays written on specific subjects, which for the purposes of the final exam will be taken into consideration as a deepening of the topics covered in the course.
Assessment criteria: The assessment of the student's preparation will be based on the understanding of the topics developed, on the acquisition of the concepts and methodologies proposed and on the capacity for argumentation and reasoning.
Course unit contents: Title: Emancipation

Module 1.Emancipation and labour
a) For a history of the concept of emancipation;
b) 19th century society and equality;
c) Marx: "human emancipation" and "real movement";
d) Marx: the struggles for the limiting of the working day;
e) Marx: The Paris Commune as "economical emancipation of labour".

Module 2. New instances of emancipation
a) From the age of imperialism to "the short century";
b) De Beauvoir: "the second sex";
c) Sartre: criticism of colonialism
d) Fanon: "the wretched of the earth";
e) Rethinking emancipation.


In addition to the lecture notes, attending students will have to take the parts of the works indicated in the "Reference texts" (with related editions and pages) to the examination.
Non-attending students must bring, in addition to the parts of the books specified for attending students, the parts of the texts that are indicated for the non-attending students in the "Reference texts" (with related editions and pages) to the examination.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Teaching will be divided into lectures and seminars with active participation of students, and then enhancing the capacity for argumentation and critical analysis. Due to the complexity of the topics covered in the course, if possible, the frequency is strongly recommended.
Additional notes about suggested reading: At the Copy Center of the SPGI Department, a booklet will be available containing all parts, to be taken to the examination, of the reference texts for attending students.
