Syllabus

Common characteristics of the Integrated Course unit

Specific characteristics of the Module

Course unit contents: The course will focus on the methods to study the Public Administration (PA).
After the presentation of the bureaucracy in a Weberian perspective, New Public Management (NPM) will be presented - as an interpretative perspective and as a transformative approach - to conclude with the Multilevel Governance (also in its dual nature). Once the cornerstones of the three visions of the Public Administration have been clarified, the course will present the links with the issue of evaluation (Module C), the course will discuss some concrete cases to understand the methods of implementation of multilevel policies (reconnecting to what was studied in Module B) and then focus on local policy making.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course will be based on active learning.
Therefore the lecture will be split in: lecturing, individual activity, group activity and discussion.
Assignments may consist in short problem sets with practical exercises (e.g. solve a practical methodological exercise related to your own research-for example writing the contact-letter for interviews- explain the results and discuss ideas with the rest of the class). The required length of each activity will vary and will be communicated each time by the instructor.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Coursepack will be changed during the year, because students will decide the topics covered by journal articles.
