Prerequisites: Proficiency in English at level B2: students should understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including complex discussions about the contents of the course. They should be able to interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes possible regular interaction with the instructor and among them without strain for either party. They are supposed to produce clear, detailed texts on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options. Students enrolled in courses different from “Politica internazionale e diplomazia” must produce a valid certificate in order to be allowed to attend classes.
Target skills and knowledge: “Politica internazionale e diplomazia” has the task to educate specialists in international relations. In this respect, nothing is more important than understanding the political system, the culture and interests of the United States. The class will give students the ability to evaluate American foreign policy in historical perspective and therefore acquire the skills necessary to work with governments, international organizations and ONGs.
Examination methods: Oral final examination
Assessment criteria: Attitude to clear and critical thinking will be the base for evaluation. Students are supposed to show their understanding of the concepts of "republic" and "empire" and, of course, of the key moments of the American history discussed during the semester.
Course unit contents: The class looks first at the constitutional arrangements of the federal government, to explain the different responsibilities of Congress and President in the conduct of foreign policy and the use of military force. In the XIX and XX Century, the United States had a vigorous debate about Western expansion, imperialism, participation to European wars and the role of the country in the world. The class will look at the different political choices that were made and at what could have been different.
