Prerequisites: The course is targeted to those Economics and Finance students who did not sit or did not pass the written test. The test, which aims at assessing an intermediate level of competence in English equal to the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), can be sit in all the other sessions of the academic year
Target skills and knowledge: The course will help students develop and master those linguistic skills needed to effectively communicate in everyday situations as well as in workplace settings. Students will consolidate reading skills, so as to be able to understand the gist as well as the lexico-grammatical and syntactic features of a number of written texts connected with the world of finance and economics.
In particular, students will be supposed to
• reach a lexico-grammatical competence equal to the B2 level of the CEFR
• acquire a linguistic knowledge of the vocabulary and discourse of English at academic level.
• develop skills to be applied when analysing economics texts.
• develop reading, listening, presentation and reporting skills.
Examination methods: Students will sit a written test (30 minutes) including the following exercises: Multiple choice (grammar), Word formation (morphology), Gap fill (vocabulary), Cloze test (grammar and vocabulary), Reading comprehension.
Assessment criteria: The exercises will refer to the domain of finance and economics.
The final evaluation will be “passed” or “not passed”. Students will be given a “pass” evaluation if reaching a final score of 70/100 or higher.

Students will be assessed on their ability to make appropriate lexico-grammatical choices and to read and understand texts belonging to the domain of economics and finance.
Course unit contents: Students will read and analyse a variety of texts belonging to the domain of economics and finance.
Students will also have an opportunity to revise the following grammar areas:
- Active and Passive Verb tenses
- Modal Verbs
- Phrasal Verbs
- Reported Speech
- Features of Nouns, Pronouns, Adjectives and Adverbs
- Linking Words
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Front lecturing on course-specific contents. Reading, listening, watching news. Pair work or group work . Students’ research work.
All students are required to attend classes.
