Syllabus
Prerequisites: Chemistry, biology, botanics
Target skills and knowledge: Learning on:
origin and characteristics of water pollution; legislation and conventional treatment techniques (general aspects);
processes of pollution treatment based on the soil-vegetation system as natural filter;
biological, design and management features of the different natural systems for water pollution control;
treatment performance of the different systems; ancillary value of wetlands;
capacity of working in teram for problem solving related to constructed wetland systems.
Examination methods: To be defined
Assessment criteria: Knowledge of the program and capacity to apply the knowledge to real case studies
Course unit contents: Origin ad features of water pollution; conventional treatment systems; wetland and other natural treatment systems
Wetland environment: features, processes, vegetation. Classification of wetland systems
Surface flow constructed constructed wetlands; floating systems
Subsurface flow wetland systems (horizontal and vertical); features, installation, suitable vegetation
Buffer strips: structure, function, vegetation choice and management; outcomes, performance
Hybrid, enhanced, space saving systems
Case studies and design. Performance assessment. Technical visits
Multi-functions of natural systems
Vegetation management: choice of suitable plants; propagation; planting; maintenance
MODELLING
First approach on modelling constructed wetlands
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: lectures and practicals
