Prerequisites: The students should know a basic understanding of the scientific literature, the experimental design and associated statistical methods, and project writing.
Target skills and knowledge: The final goal is giving the student the capacity of preparing a research project with particular reference to sustainable agriculture, pest and disease problems. In order to achieve this, the students will be trained on:
a) describing a problem and define a research goal;
b) how to get the information needed to describe the state of the art (background) and to set up the methods to work on the project:
- finding, reading and understanding the types of scientific literature (research paper, review paper, textbook); ,
c) preparing Material and Methods (with WP workpackages, Tasks) considering very well risks and constraints and describing also the relative solutions to each of them; this will include formulating hypotheses, finding out the appropriate experimental method to test them, running the experiment and drawing conclusions,
d) describing expected results with Deliverables and Milestones
e) preparing timetables and budget;
f) searching for funding possibilities.
Examination methods: To be defined
Assessment criteria: Comparative assessment of the outputs in the class through short talks and oral questions.
Course unit contents: Basic information needed to analize questions in sustainable agriculture and plant protection in particular and to draft a research project. Define questions in sustainable agriculture and plant protection in particular.
Analyse and understand a research paper.
Analyse and understand a review paper.
Analyse and understand a textbook.
Design experiments and test hypotheses.
Draft a research project.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Theory and practice in computer room with access to the information databases and libraries.
