Prerequisites: The student has to know the basics on soil, climate, cultivation techniques, main crops
Target skills and knowledge: The students will learn how to improve the sustainability of farming systems, producing food and biomasses respecting the natural resources; they will also learn the ecosystems services provided by agriculture for human well being.
Examination methods: The final evaluation will be by means of oral exam and by means of the preparation and exposition of a group work.
Assessment criteria: The evaluation of the student will be based on the comprehension of the addressed topics and on the base of the concepts and methodologies learnt during the class. The ability of the student of using such aspects in an independent way will also be taken into account.
Course unit contents: UN Agenda 2030 for sustainability. World Organizations and projects. Agriculture and food systems; The global food system; Poverty and hunger; Localization of food systems. Understanding agricultural sustainability: Definitions; agricultural sustainability: goals, indicators. Improving sustainability of farming systems: management of soil, crop, vegetation biodiversity, water, nutrients, weeds, pest and disease control. New farming systems: Urban farming, Agroforestry, Organic farming. Pollution control in the agro-systems: wetlands, buffer strips, minor hydraulic network. . Processes and institutions. Case studies
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course will be done in classroom (4 CFU) with theoretical lectures, working groups (1 CFU) and seminars (1 CFU)
