Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge in livestock science
Target skills and knowledge: The student will learn different approaches for the assessment of sustainability of livestock framing systems. Organic livestock farming (Reg. CE 834/2007) will be presented considering different species. The student will be able to produce critical analyses of the strategies aimed at improve and valorize the sustainability of livestock farming systems.
Examination methods: oral exam
Assessment criteria: Journal club and discussion groups are organized during the semester,and the level of participation is considered for the final evaluation. A mini-review on a specific topic must be prepared by the students not attending the lectures. Oral exam verifies the learning outcomes.
Course unit contents: 6 ECTS:
1) Overview and classification of livestock chains, focused on sustainability issues
2) Life Cycle Assessment and case studies
3) Livestock systems and ecosystem services
4) Organic livestock farming: overview, regulation and labelling.
5) Organic livestock chains: management and productive issues in cattle farms; case study
6) Organic livestock chains: management and productive issues in pig and poultry farms; case study
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures,presentation and discussion of scientific papers , technical excursions
