Prerequisites:
|
Basic knowledges of statistics, matematics, animal nutrition.
Students are suggested to have preliminary attended the courses on animal husbandry and production of the First-cycle degrees, as well as principles of economics. |
Target skills and knowledge:
|
The student will acquire basic knowledge on the use of specific tools developed for livestock farms for data editing, data archiving and database querying.
Specifically, he will acquire advanced skill of Microsoft Excel to solve complex problems of calculation and databases management, as well as basic skills of Microsoft Access to handle livestock databases.
Furthermore, the student will be able to use application programs for formulating feed mixtures or diets for various animal species and for farm management. |
Examination methods:

The exam takes place in the informatics room and is based on the skills acquired during the course. It consists in a practical part using the laptop and based on handling livestock databases similar to those handled at lesson. |
Assessment criteria:
|
To verify the ability of reasoning on questions about the management of a livestock farm, and of solving problems related to data archiving/managing, simple statistics calculation, feed mixtures formulation, management aspects. |
Course unit contents:
|
st CFU: Overview of management tools for livestock farms. Visit at experimental farm "Toniolo" (University of Padova - Legnaro), including a presentation of softwares currently used there.
2nd CFU: Tools developments for farm management using Excel: basic knowledges of Excels, data management; basic skills of Access intended for handling livestock databases.
3rd CFU: Management tools specific for each livestock species: dairy cattle, beef cattles, pigs, rabbits, poultry: data collection, methods and software; practical handling of livestock databases.
4th CFU: Specific applications for farm management: economic management of the livestock farm; feed rations management. |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods:

Students will be guided into tutorials and practical exercises through which they will acquire skills to create and use databases to solve problems related to livestock management of different species; frontal lessons, single persons and group exercises, exam simulations and visits in livestock farms are intended. |
