Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of chemistry, physics and math.
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to illustrate the basic knowledge to plan and to perform a chemical analysis. The student will comprehend the theory underling food analyses and will experience the practice the methodologies of foodstuff essay.
Examination methods: The final exam will be held in oral form. The exam comprises three questions aimed at the evaluation of the student's comprehension and capacity in applying the acquired concepts.
Students, divided into groups, will also produce an essay reporting the lab experiences.
Assessment criteria: The students' assessment will be based on the knowledges apprehended and the comprehension of the methodologies seen during the course, and in the capacity of critically evaluate their application.
Course unit contents: Analytical methods characteristics, phases of a chemical analysis, choice of the analytical method, labware. Sampling, sample preparation, performing an analysis. Analytical data treatment, accuracy, repeatability and reproducibility, sources of errors. 1 CFU

Electrophoresis methods, isoelectrofocusing. Immunologic methods (ELISA, Western Blot). 3CFU

Light and matter: main spectroscopic techniques. 2CFU

Chromatographic tecniques (GC, HPLC). Basics of mass spectroscopy, genomics and proteomics. 2CFU
