Syllabus
Prerequisites: Entomology
Course unit contents: Natural ecosystems and agrarian landscape. Notes on the dynamic population of animals. Regulatory factors of phytophagous populations. Biotic factors: parasites and predators. Abiotic factors.
Trophic interactions and biological control. Pesticide side-effects on arthropod natural enemies. Causes of arthropods outbreaks. Pesticide resistance in arthropods.
Biological control strategies: reintroduction of natural enemies, augmentation (inoculative and inundative release). Beneficial insects and mites production.
Biological control with microorganisms and entomopathogenic nematodes. Trapping and monitoring systems. Mass trapping. Mating disruption. Sterile insect technique and release of Insects carrying a dominant lethal. Symbiotic control.
Biological control agents: predator insects and mites.
Biological control agents: parasitoid insects.
