Prerequisites:
|
Minimal knowledge required:
• Basic use of personal computer
• Basic knowledge of the Office Platform (Excel) |
Target skills and knowledge:
|
The course aims to provide the students with a specific learning opportunity in the field of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in agriculture.
The aim of the course is to illustrate the features and functionality of the Geographic Information Systems, in particular of the spatial analysis functions that distinguish them from the more generic tools for cartographic mapping.
A further objective is the verification and evaluation of the databases required for a GIS.
The course presents the main functions of the platform ESRI ArcGIS 10.x; the tool shown was chosen in relation to its large diffusion and presence for organizations and administrations at national and international level. |
Examination methods:
|
At the end of the course, students are required to complete a practical exercise to evaluate the acquired skills. |
Assessment criteria:
|
The correctness of the obtained results, knowledge of the procedures, quality of the work (work organization, organization of data, quality of presented outputs). |
Course unit contents:
|
The course will be divided into several modules that will develop both methodological and operational subjects referring to the following components :
• ArcGIS presentation: theory and system training
• Cartography and geographic systems: theory and practical exercise
• Google Earth images georeferentiation in ArcMap (practical example)
• Vector data: legend for the qualitative and quantitative data (practical example)
• Basic operations on vector data: managing attribute tables, charts, import external data, query tools and selection (practical example)
• Editing vector data: polygon, polyline, page layout settings (practical example)
• The raster data model: visualization and contour lines (practical example)
• Raster data analysis: interpolation, raster calculator, NDVI and crop water requirement (practical example)
• GIS application for quantification of damages caused by invasive species in agriculture (practical example) |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods:
|
The teaching will be full immersion, with daily applications in GIS lab. The lectures will be organized into seminars and theoretical applications.
In the first part of the lesson the methodologies and operational activities necessary to the resolution of the topics covered will be presented, in the second part of the session, the students will practically apply the acquired theoretical knowledge. The class is mainly dedicated to practices, with simulations of the covered topics.
The students will learn how to manage in GIS environment some critical issues in agriculture, with the analysis of real case studies. |
Additional notes about suggested reading:
|
At the end of each lesson, the students receive a handout on the topics covered. |
