Syllabus
Prerequisites: This is a class for first year students. You only need to be curious about history.
Target skills and knowledge: Students will gain a general knowledge of history of European and non-European societies across the early modern time, with a special attention devoted to those processes leading to modernity. This knowledge is essential for a correct understanding of the present. Aim of any historical interpretation is to avoid teleology, by placing historical facts in their spatial and cultural contexts, in a long-term perspective. The course is therefore important for prospect teachers, even if early modern and modern history is not part of the program in the Italian primary schools. Anyhow, modern history can be included in more advanced interdisciplinary programs proposed also in primary schools. From this perspective, the course is preparatory for History of Pedagogy and Schools and Didactics of History, scheduled for the 2nd and 5th year, respectively.
Examination methods: For attending students:
* 8 CFU: written exam (three open questions on the course topics) + one essay question on the chosen project.
*2 CFU in early modern or modern history: oral exam

For students not attending classes:
*8 CFU: written exams (three open questions on handbook topics and one question on the book of Parker, Charles H., Global Interactions in the Early Modern Age (italian or english version) + one essay question on the chosen project.
*2 CFU in early modern or modern history: oral exam.
Assessment criteria: The quality of the answers and skills in singling out the most important aspects of the proposed topics are the central criteria for the evaluation of the written exam.
It is expected that students pay a special attention to the interaction between time and space, and to the cultural, social and economic factors leading to modernity.
Course unit contents: The course title is: "The historians'glasses: perspectives on early modern and modern history" is divided into two parts. The first part (about 50 hours) is an introduction to early modern history, with a particular attention to some crucial processes leading to modernity. In the second part, we will focus on the ways whereby history is portrayed in literature and movies and on the relationship between history and fiction.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Traditional lecture with power-point. The power-point presentation will be uploaded on the common platform along with some further materials.
