Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of molecular and cell biology and histology

Required exams: Biologia Molecolare, Istologia, Biologia Applicata
Target skills and knowledge: Definition of Stem cells; biological assays to define stemness; animal models; present and potential applications; use of stem cells as models of diseases and for regenerative medicine purposes. Somatic stem cells, embryonic and induced stem cells. Ability to read and critically discuss scientific papers.
Examination methods: Oral and/or written examinations in itinere
Assessment criteria: Understanding of the subject; ability to discuss content of the lessons; ability to critically discuss relevant scientific papers
Course unit contents: Elements of embryonic development;
Embryonic and somatic stem cells biology: principles and methodologies;
Emergent properties of stem cells and their derivatives in tissue context;
Physical and chemical cues that regulate stem cell behavior;
Lineage tracing;
Cellular plasticity and its use for cell reprograming in vitro and in physio-pathological conditions in vivo;
Stemness transcription factors;
Stem niches and their study through the employment of biomaterials;
Regenerative medicine approaches;
Animal models for the study of diseases caused by defective or excessive stem cell renewal;
Cancer as a stem cell disease: molecular mechanisms.
