Prerequisites: The student must know general chemistry.
Target skills and knowledge: - solution equilibria in aqueous media, calculation of the equilibrium concentrations in solution
- basics on the chemical quantitative analytical methods
- classical analytical methods: titrations
- principles of statistics applied to anaytical chemistry (chemiometry)
- qualitative chemical analysis, determination of simple compounds
- simple laboratory skills
Examination methods: There are two written exams, one for the "analisi dei medicinali 1" part, the other for the "chimica analitica" part.
The written exam for the "chimica analitica" part will contain 3 exercises (with a total maximum mark of 18) and 13 questions with predefinite answers (with a total mark of 13). The sum of the marks is the mark of the "chimica analitica" part (31 = 30 cum laude).
From these two exams, "chimica analitica" and "analisi dei medicinali 1" part, a mean mark is obtained. This mean mark can be modified (maximum by 1 unit) by the quality of the laboratory activity and of the written reports of this activity.

Course unit contents: This course is divided in two parts (and it has two teachers): the "analisi dei medicinali 1" part, and the "chimica analitica" part. the programs for these two parts are the following.

"Analisi dei medicinali 1" part
Good practice and safety in a chemistry laboratory. Safety rules and papers. Introduction to the inorganic qualitative chemical analysis. Simple techniques and operations: mass and volume measurements, solubilization, dilution, preparation of solutions with known concentration, pH measurement, analytically relevant pH buffers. Precipitation, centrifugation, filtration, liquid-liquid extraction, crystalization. Coordination compounds: introduction and analytical importance. Optical methods: flame tests, atomic absorption spectroscopy, elemental analysis. Main chemical reactions for the identification of unknown compounds.

"Chimica analitica" part
Solution equilibria: acid-base, complexometric, precipitation, redox. Competitive equilibria. Distribution diagrams. Pharmaceutical applications. Objectives and methods of quantitative analytical chemistry. Gravimetric analysis. Titrations (acid-base, complexometric, precipitation, redox). Equivalence point, colorimetric indication and potentiometric (by electrode) indication. Electrodes. Mean, standard deviation, confidence interval and degree, Student and gaussian distribution. Significant digits. Error propagation.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: There will be theoretical lessons and experimental activities. The former represent the theoretical basis, the latter the practical application. The laboratory activity will be performed both as alone and in groups of more students.
