Target skills and knowledge: The students will learn about the organization of tissues and organs of the human body. This knowledge will allow them to better understand the subsequent classes of biochemistry, physiology, pathology and pharmacology.
Knowledge of the macroscopic structure of internal organs and anatomical apparatuses will be linked to their microscopic structure and function.
Examination methods: At the beginning of the first lesson of the course, the schedule of the examinations for the whole academic year is given to the students: two written examinations during the course and five oral ones (two on February, one on June, one on July, one on September). Written examinations consist of two questions (40 minutes) related to the topics discussed during the classes.
The contents of the course may be divided into two parts: i) part I biology, histology,integumentary, cardiovascular, and lymphatic systems ; ii) part II respiratory, digestive, urinary, endocrine, and nervous systems. The final score is the media of the scores obtained in each part.
Assessment criteria: The student must demonstrate to:
- know the main features of organs and apparatus paying specific attention to microscopic structure;
- be able to connect microscopic structure with function;
- possess good skill of anatomical terminology
Course unit contents: BIOLOGY
Organelle structures of the eukariotic cell: plasma membrane, cytoskeleton, smooth endoplasmatic reticulum, rough endoplasmatic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, lysosomes and perossisomes, mitochondrium, nucleus, nucleolus, ribosomes. Chromatin, chromosomes.
Permeability of plasma membrane: passive transport (diffusion, carriers, ion channels), active transport, ATPases, endocytosis, esocytosis. Cell adhesion: gap, tight, and anchoring junctions. Cell cycle, mitosis e meiosis. Necrosis e apoptosis.

The epithelial tissues: basal membrane; surfacing and glandular epithelia; classification and main localizations; sensory epithelia.
The connective tissues: extracellular matrix; connective tissue proper, adipose tissue, cartilage, bone. The blood: hematopoiesis, plasma, morphology and functions of blood cells.
The muscle: skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle; neuromuscular junction; muscle contraction
The nervous tissue: neuron; classification of neurons; synapses; myelin. Neuroglial cells: structure and function.

The integumentary system: The structure and function of skin. Skin glands.
The locomotor system: The vertebral column. The thorax. The pelvis. Bones of the skull. Classifications of joints; joint of knee.
The cardiovascular system: Gross and microscopic anatomy of heart, electrical conducting system, fibrous skeleton and heart valves. Pericardium. Systemic and pulmonar circulations. Aorta and its main vessels. Circle of Willis. Main venous vessels. Portal system. Structure of blood vessels. Angiogenesis.
The lymphatic system: Lympha. Structure and function of lymphatics. Bone marrow, thymus, spleen, and lymphonodes.
The respiratory system (gross, microscopic and functional anatomy): nasal cavity, larinx, trachea and bronchi, lung, alveoli, pleurae.
The digestive system (gross, microscopic and functional anatomy): mouth, tong, salivary glands, pharynx, esofagus, stomach, small and large intestine. Liver, biliary ducts, gallbladder. Pancreas. Peritoneum and its main functions.
The urinary system (gross, microscopic and functional anatomy): kidney, nephron, juxtaglomerular apparatus, urinary ducts.
The endocrine system: structure of hypophysis cerebri, pineal body, thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, chromafin and cortical systems and pancreas.
The female reproductive system: ovaries, uterine tube, uterus

Organization of SNC. Gross and microscopic anatomy of spinal cord, medulla oblongata, pons, and mesencephalon. Cerebellum: morphology, structure and functions. Diencephalon: morphology and structure of hypothalamus, thalamus, subthalamu, epythalamus, metathalamus. Telencephalon: morphology, commissural fibers, capsulae, basal ganglia, cerebral cortex. Motor and sensory areas. Lymbic system. Ventricular system and cerebrospinal fluid. Meninges. Blood-brain barrier.
Peripheryc nervous system.
 Structures of nerves. Main features of spinal and cranial nerves. Dermatome.
Somatic nervous system. Cutaneous receptor, exteroception pathways. Muscle spindles e Golgi tendon organ, proprioception pathways. Pyramidal and extrapyramidal system.
Autonomic nervous system. Interoception pathways. Structure and function of sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.
The eye. Tunics and chambers. The optic nerve and optic reflexes. Reflex arc.
The ear. External, middle, and internal ear. Coclear nerve and vestibular nerve.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course comprises 72 hours (9 CFU). During this time, lectures and follow up activities are carried out. The latter gives further information on some topics of the course with a main focus on therapeutic applications. Slides of lectures are available on Moodle.
