Prerequisites: None
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to provide a basic knowledge of the relations between materials microstructure and properties, with particular reference to the materials more frequently employed in constructions.The student should be able, after the course, to associate each class of materials with the main properties on the basis of the structure. It will also have to acquire the ability to identify, in principle, the type of material for the specific application.
Examination methods: Written exam and possible oral exam designed to verify the acquisition of autonomy of judgment and the learning ability of students, as well as their communication skills. The written test consists of the extended answer to two questions, of synthetic answers to 6 or 8 questions and in one exercise. The extended answers have the purpose of verifying the degree of deepening of the preparation, the synthetic ones have the objective of verifying the completeness of the preparation and the exercise aims to evaluate the ability to apply, even numerically, the theoretical notions.
Assessment criteria: The assessment will be based on the student's understanding of the arguments, on the acquisition of concepts and methodologies proposed and the ability to apply them in a conscious and autonomous.
Course unit contents: Structure of the materials: bonds, crystalline and amorphous structure, defects in the crystals. (12 hrs)
Thermodynamics of solid state materials: phase diagrams, surface energy. (10 hrs)
Phase transformations and diffusion. Glass transition. (5 hrs)
Properties of materials: mechanical and thermal (13 hrs); corrosion (3 hrs); optical (2 hrs).
Different classes of materials and their processes: metals and steel (6 hrs); ceramics, glasses and polymers (6 hrs); cements and concrete (6 hrs).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures and optional group work.
