Prerequisites:

In order to pass the exam and obtain the relevant credit points, students should demonstrate at least good intermediate German language skills (B1 CEFR or higher).
Apart from the final exam, both students, professors and members of the University of Padua/Treviso interested in gaining some insight into German legal terminology are welcome to attend regardless of their German language literacy and/or proficiency. |
Target skills and knowledge:

The principal skills developed are: the study of German legal terminology in the framework of various German speaking countries and jurisdictions.
From a comparative perspective: the ability to focus on the distinctive features of the German legal system and discuss differences and/or similarities between the German, Austrian, Swiss and Italian legal system(s). |
Examination methods:

The exam is in German and consists in an oral test. Students who do not attend the course regularly are invited to contact the Teacher to define one or more specific topics and tasks for exam preparation. |
Assessment criteria:

Assessment is based on the student's knowledge and understanding of German legal texts and terminology that are part of the course syllabus. |
Course unit contents:

This course aims at providing students with a thorough grounding in the basics of the German legal system and legal language. |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods:
|
Regular consultation and analysis of legal texts as a starting point for: grammar practice, terminology study, individual and class discussion. Regular use of authentic video/audio resources to develop listening skills. |

For those who attend the course on a regular basis a reader will be distributed. Further information with regard to recommended textbooks and websites will be provided at the beginning of the course. |
