Prerequisites: The English language is required to easily attend classes – which will be taught in English – and to appropriately and actively join any kind of initiative offered.
Target skills and knowledge: The course is aimed at an a in-depth analysis and detailed study of the legal terminology in the English language and of the interpretative rules used in common law jurisdictions for the comprehension and composition of legal texts. The final goal is the use of foreign language for the study of legal fields within professional and academic context, considering the most updated implications of the English legal discourse in the different English-speaking countries and the recent changes that are occurring in the two legal families, common law and civil law. The path is finalized to understand the role and the operational process used by international and national institutions, in addition to private entities using use the English language in legal contexts.
Examination methods: Oral examination in English language on the topics focused in the test with identification of legal sources and documents drawn up in English. Critical attitude and arguing ability are required.
Assessment criteria: The ability to understand and explain the issues suggested in appropriate legal English.
Tests, exercises and presentations held by students during the course will be taken into consideration.
Course unit contents: Analysis of the evolutionary use of Legal English considering the Legal English Discourse in accordance with the Plain Language Movement.
Relationship between language and law (English for Law – EfL)
Investigation on the English language effectiveness in specific legal fields of the Anglo-American legal context, of the Ue Law and of international law and, specifically:
a) Introduction to Language and Law and Methods for linguistic skills;
b) Sources of Law; c) contract law d) The Law–making process; e) The EU Law; f) focus on Human Rights; g) civil and criminal proceedings.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Classroom-taught lessons with wide stimulus to dialogue. Students are required to actively participate in English during individual and team activities. The combination between theoretical learning and field tests throughout texts, video and specific exercises in legal English has the aim to help students develop methods for learning skills (understanding, comprehending, reading, writing and speaking) with critical attitude and arguing ability.
A methodological combination will be previliged between the traditional form-dominated approach to legal English patterns and the genre-based English legal language learning, with emphasis on the learner-centred approach.
