Prerequisites: To attend the examination, the student must have passed the examination of the Molecular Biology, Zoology, Histology and Veterinary Embryology course.
Target skills and knowledge: The aim of the course is to give students knowledge of apparatus and organs of the main mammalian species of veterinary interest (horse, bovine, small ruminants, pig, dog, cat, birds, fishes). Students will learn the macroscopic and microscopic features of the different organs.
Examination methods: The exam consists of a gross anatomy practical test, a microanatomy practical test (identification with the microscope of histological samples) and a final oral examination.
Assessment criteria: Students will be evaluated about the understanding of arguments, the acquisition of the correct anatomical terminology, and the identification of anatomical landmarks.
Course unit contents: SPLANCHNOLOGY:
the course consists entirely on theoretical lessons and furnishes basic concepts of animal body organization. The course concerns with: General description of apparatus and organs in the splanchnic cavities:
•Digestive apparatus (mouth, pharynx, teeth, oesophagus, stomach, small and large intestine,liver and pancreas)
•Respiratory apparatus (nose, nasal cavities, pharynx, larynx, trachea e lungs)
•Urogenital apparatus (kidney and urinary tract, male and female reproductive organs)
•Description of the splanchnic cavities and disposition of serous membranes (serosa):
•Thoracic cavity (pleura, mediastinum and pericardium)
•Abdominal and pelvic cavities (peritoneum)
•Heart and circulatory systems (blood and lymphatic vessels, lymphatic organs). Blood circulation of limbs will be part of the Topographical Anatomy course.
. Tegumentary Apparatus

Principles of development of organs and apparatus. This part of the program is helpful in understanding the definitive position and organization of different organs.

SPECIAL VETERINARY ANATOMY The course will be structured in theoretical lessons dealing with anatomy of the dog and the cat. Practical sessions consists of macroscopic dissection of animals.
•Head: conformation and external features, superficial structures, nasal cavities and paranasal sinuses, the mouth and oropharynx, dentition, the salivary glands and the larynx. Blood and lymphatic vessels.
•Ventral part of the neck: trachea, oesophagus, thymus, nerves and vessels, thyroid gland, lymphnodes.
•Thorax: conformation and surface anatomy, the thoracic wall and pleural cavities, the lungs, the mediastinum, the heart, The oesophagus, trachea and thymus, the great vessels within the thorax, lymphatic structures.
•Abdomen: conformation and surface anatomy, the abdominal wall, the spleen, general aspects of visceral topography, the stomach, the liver, the pancreas, the kidneys and adrenal glands, the great vessels and the lymph nodes of the abdominal cavity.
•The pelvis and reproductive organs: general anatomy of pelvis and of perineum, the rectum and anus, the bladder and female urethra, the female reproductive organs and placentation (ovaries, uterine tubes, uterus, vagina, vestibule and vulva), The male reproductive organs (scrotum and testes, urethra and and accessory reproductive glands, penis and prepuce), the great vessels and the lymph nodes of the pelvis.
•Skin Adnexa: Mammary gland, Hooves, hair

The course consists on theoretical (50%) and practical (50%) lessons. The students, during practical and supervised works, can observe microscopic preparations of all organs in the microscope room. The course concerns with:
Digestive system:
•oral cavity, salivary glands, teeth, tongue, pharynx, oesophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver, small and large intestine.
Respiratory system:
•nasal cavity, nasopharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs.
Urogenital system:
•Kidney and urinary organs, gonads and male and female genital organs.
Endocrine system:
•Thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, adrenal gland, hypophysis, hypothalamus, pineal gland,endocrine pancreas, diffuse neuroendocrine system.
Microscopic structure of arterial, venous and lymphatic vessels. Microscopic structure of the heart. Microscopic structure of lymphatic tissue and organs (thymus, lymph nodes, tonsils, spleen).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course of Splanchnology and Special Veterinary Anatomy consists on
40 hrs of theoretical lessons: Splanchnology (32 hrs), Blood and Lymphatic circulatory systems (4 hrs), Avian and Fish Anatomy (4 hrs)
20 hrs practical lessons (dissecting room)

10 hrs theoretical lessons
20 hrs practical lessons (microscopy room)
