Prerequisites:

Students should have attended Lingua e Traduzione Inglese I and have B2+ level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)before taking the exam for this module. . |
Target skills and knowledge:

In-depth knowledge of the methods for the effective English-Italian writing and translation of formal texts such as business correspondence, project documentation, instructions, reports, curricula, technical specifications and summaries. |
Examination methods:
|
Final written exam based on the content of the three modules:
Part A: Production of a specialised written text based on those studied during the module, with commentary.
Part B: Translation into English of a text based on those studied in the module, with commentary.
Part C: Translation into Italian of a text based on those studied during the module, with guided commentary with open and/or closed questions.
Students who regularly attend lessons will also have the possibility to complete tasks for continuous assessment. |
Assessment criteria:

Ability to analyse and identify linguistic features of specialised texts using corpora. Ability to produce specialised written texts in English.
Ability to analyse and translate specialised texts, to identify their features, decide how they can be translated and assess their quality. |
Course unit contents:

The course is divided in three parts:
Part A TECHNICAL WRITING 20 hours;
ITALIAN/ENGLISH TRANSLATION 10 hours;
Part C ENGLISH/ITALIAN TRANSLATION 10 hours.
The course aims to provide students with in-depth knowledge of the writing and translation of formal texts. Macrotextual, discourse and genre features are first analysed as a basis to develop in-depth knowledge of morphosyntax, figurative language, terminology, phraseology and lexis. The chosen perspective is comparative and contrastive in order to throw light on translation methods and strategies of writing and translating. |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods:

Lessons will be based on a combination of interactive lectures and groupwork. Learning activities will be carried out through elearning platforms. Students who attend class are expected to take an active part in all activities. There will be a focus on autonomous and collaborative learning.
