Syllabus
Prerequisites: No prerequisites are required, but availability and interest to learn.
Target skills and knowledge: The students will acquire knowledge of the historical diversity of the European and extra-European societies through the main themes of the early modern times.
This body of knowledge will be functional to understand present societies, avoiding teleological interpretations. Time and spatial frame will be privileged as well as global and long term perspectives.
Examination methods: Attending students
* 6 CFU written exam (3 open questions on the topics)
* 9 CFU written exam (3 open questions on the topics and one open question on the topics on the consuerism discussed in class)

Non attending students
* 6 CFU: written exam (3 open questions based on the compulsory texts)
* 9 CFU: written exam (4 open questions based on the compulsory texts)
Assessment criteria: The exam will be evaluated on the basis of the relevance and completeness of the answers and the ability to understand the proposed topics.
The students will be expected to focus on the spatial and temporal coordinates; on the cultural, social or economic elements; on the continuities and changes of the main discussed topics.
Course unit contents: Which was the impact of the first ‘early modern’ globalization? How did early modern societies fabricate gender relations? How did fashions and consumption work?

This course deals with these and other questions, analyzing the main topics with respect to the European and extra-European societies and showing differences and similarities among the various cultures.

The first two modules (6 CFU – 42 hours) will analyze these topics :

• Globalization
• Power
• Market
• Gender

The third module (21 hours, 3 CFU) will focus on the

• Consumerism
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lecture with use of power-points, images, sources and graphs.
The presentations will be available on the e-learning space. Additional readings (also in English, French, Spanish) will be provided for those students who are interested.
Guide-lines and questions will be available in order to prepare the final examination.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Attending students:
• 6 CFU: notes, power-point, textbook - only the topic discussed in class
• 9 CFU: notes, power-point, textbook and texts on moodle.

Non attending students:
• 6 CFU: the textbook (Kumin or Bellabarba - Lavenia, Introduzione alla Storia Moderna).
• 9 CFU: the textbook (Kumin or Bellabarba - Lavenia, Introduzione alla Storia Moderna) and the volume of F. Braudel and the volume of Belfanti, Civiltà della moda.
