Prerequisites: There are no special prerequisites required.
Target skills and knowledge: The course is aimed at the introduction to Romance Philology and it aims to provide students with general concepts and guidelines in order to raise awareness of the major issues, methods and tools of Romance Philology and linguistics, with specific regard to the origins of the Romance languages​​, their formation, their oldest written records and the literary texts of the Middle Ages, commented according to different perspectives of analysis
Examination methods: The test will be an oral examination.
Assessment criteria: Knowledge of the contents and assimilation of the concepts
Ability to analyse, compare, summarize and critically re-elaborate the acquired knowledge.
Expository style and use of specific language.
Course unit contents: Problems and methods of Romance Philology. The Romance languages​​. The early texts of Romance languages ​​and literatures. The critical edition. The Medieval epics in France and Spain. Aspects of the poetry of the troubadours. The Arthurian literature.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Theoretical framing of the issues related to Romance Philology and Romance languages. Exercises of historical-linguistic and literary analysis throu the reading of the texts of the early Romance literatures. Introduction to the method of the critical edition of Romance texts.
Additional notes about suggested reading: During the lectures the parts of the manuals to be explored will be provided more in detail.
Possible additional materials will be also provided.
