Syllabus
Prerequisites: Intermediate proficiency in the use of the English language.
Target skills and knowledge: General knowledge of the Victorian age (main questions and themes).
Examination methods: Oral exam testing the in-depth knowledge of primary and secondary texts.
Assessment criteria: Ability to talk about the themes of the course in English, including the ability to make connections between writers and texts, also making use of the critical material studied during the course and provided in the course bibliography.
Course unit contents: The course will investigate the centrality of some recurring "myths" that characterize and often call into question the very nature of modernity: via the topoi of ‘the monster’ and of ‘the machine’ the British, as well as the European 19th century at large, obsessively interrogates the roots of its distance from other historical periods.
Classes will be based on the in-depth reading of the novels while also making use of iconographic material and of films.
