Syllabus
Prerequisites: Intermediate skills in English
Target skills and knowledge: Knowledge of the main themes and issues related to British literature of the 'Long Nineteenth Century'. Students will be able to recognize and discuss in English on literary genres, as well as on the most important cultural and ideological issues of the time.
Examination methods: Oral exam, primary texts will be essential, bring your books (any format accepted)!
Assessment criteria: Students will argue over the main key terms and issues in decent, understandable, functional English. They will be able to connect authors and texts to the general discourses treated in class and to the critical material listed in the bibliography section.
Course unit contents: Madness, monsters and the Gothic double

We shall work on some of the founding 'myths' of the British long nineteenth century: monsters and machines, which are indeed European, if not 'Western' topoi , characterizing and also question ing the very assets of 'modernity'.
We shall use literary texts, but also iconographical and visual materials, which shall be expounded during specific thematic lectures, and which relate to mythical, often revised figures and texts such as Frankenstein, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Dorian Gray, Dracula.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures and texts are all in English. Powerpoint presentations and recorded lectures are uploaded on the Moodle plaform.

Lectures will be divided into:
1. thematic lectures on madness and monstrosity in the nineteenth century,
2. film vision and discussion,
3. reading and discussion groups on the essays in the reading list.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Primary Reading (the literary works we shall analyze):

Novels:
M. Shelley, Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus
