Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic conceptual capabilities and knowledge typically shown by students with their high school certificate.
Target skills and knowledge: The overall aim of the course in General Psychology is to provide a critical understanding of theory and methods and basic topics concerning sensation, perception and attention, learning and memory, motivation and emotions, cognition and intelligence. Methods of investigation of these functions will be particularly stressed. The Course includes three modules. The aim the first part of the course, is to develop conceptual and analytic skills relevant to the understanding of topics that will be presented following part. The second part of the module will cover the various areas of general psychology.
The course of Social Psychology aims to provide students with theoretical and methodological tools for analyzing psychosocial dimensions, through the study of the main processes that govern the interaction between individuals and between the individual and society.
Examination methods: The exam will consist in a written part lasting about 1 hour and including both multiple-choice and open questions.
In order to participate in the exams students must book 15 to 3 days prior to the date of the exam
Assessment criteria: The examination will cover all the topics included in the two modules.
The assessment will be based on understanding of the arguments, on the acquisition of concepts and methodologies proposed and the ability to apply them in an autonomous way.

The two modules are closely integrated. Lessons, exam preparation and scoring, as well as exam sessions are arranged in collaboration by the two professors.
Course unit contents: General Psychology
1 Introduction to psychology: history, topics and methods(11 hrs);
2 Sensation, perception and attention (8 hrs);
3 Learning and memory (8 hrs);
4 Cognition and intelligence (5 hrs);
5 Motivation and emotion (5hrs).
6.Executive functions (5hrs).

Social Psychology
The historical foundations of the discipline: from the study of individual processes to cultural psychology (7 hours)
Introduction social psychology research: from the laboratory to everyday situations (7 hours)
Speaking as social practice: discursive interactions (7 hours)
The study of attitudes: from rating scale to ethnographic methods (7 hours)
Group processes: from group identity to positioning (7 hours)
Methods and tools for social psychology (7 hours)
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Teaching will include both face to face lessons and more interactive aspects such as exercises or experiments to be discussed in class.
Theoretical topics are treated in their general aspects. The student must then investigate the topics covered in class using textbooks and suggested readings. Students are invited to participate in an active and critical way to the various training courses.
