Prerequisites: No prior knowledge is required.
Target skills and knowledge: The aim of the course in Tourism Statistics is to provide
1) the basics of the descriptive statistics;
2) the knowledge of the typical problems, that can solved by statistics, in the contest of tourism;
and to increase the ability
1) of problem solving, by facing real problems through real datasets;
2) of the assessment of the used methods and the obtained results, through discussions in groups within the lesson.
Examination methods: A written exam of two hours will be taken, with at least one short essay question on the theory, and some exercises to be solved, in order to test the level of knowledge and the reached assessment ability.
Assessment criteria: It will be tested:
1) the knowledge of the statistical isseues faced during the course;
2) the knowledge and the understanding of the keynotes and methods proposed;
3) the ability to apply that knowledge in autonomy and consciously;
4) the ability to build a personal critic, relevant, clear, and effective argument.
Course unit contents: 1) Introduction to statistics: data collection, different types of variables in statistics.
2) Univariate descriptive statistics : indices for quantitative and qualitative variables. Plots.
Quantitative variables: distribution and frequency. Measures of central tendency and dispersion.
Qualitative variables: mean summary statistics and measures.
3) Bivariate descriptive statistics: joint, marginal and conditional distribution.
4) Simple and multiple linear regression.
5) Statistical analysis of tourism data: percent variations, index numbers, tourism indicators.
Analysis will be applied to:
i) tourism flows in time and space
ii) customer satisfaction of goods, cultural goods, and services (e.g., customer satisfaction in tourism accommodation, in tourist destination, in art places, and in exhibitions).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Students will be involved during the lessons and the discussion will be stimulated.
The attendance is highly recommended.
