Syllabus
Prerequisites: None
Target skills and knowledge: The course will examine the problem of ethics in Modern Age, through an inquiry on the foundation of morals from a philosophical point of view in that period, focusing one of the most important works in philosophical ethics of the whole Modern Age, i.e. Immanuel Kant’s Critic of Practical Reasoning.
The aim of the course is to provide students not only with good knowledge of the principal questions of philosophical ethics in general, and with the historical background of Kantian thought, but also with the conceptual tools for a personal method in reading the most important modern works about moral philosophy.
Examination methods: Oral exam
Assessment criteria: Evaluation of the level reached by the student will be based on the property in using philosophical language and in expounding topics as requested by the teacher, on the ability to demonstrate good capabilities in discussion about them and on the knowledge of the historical background of the texts and of the authors.
The course will study the origin of modern philosophy on morals, on metaethics and on prescriptive ethics, in its connection with modern experimental science.
Course unit contents: The course will start with a survey of the importance of the “mechanistic paradigm” in modern philosophy, and of the new ideas about the world and nature linked with it.
The final aim of the course is the analysis of the Kantian philosophy of morals, and its foundation through the concept of a practical reason, showing all the intrinsic difficulties of such a philosophical theory, discussing the Kantian concepts of right and wrong.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lessons will be in the form of seminars, to encourage students’ participation in the activities.
It will be very useful to attend the lessons, and to take notes.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Non attending students shall read one of these two books:
- Filippo GONNELLI, Guida alla lettura della Critica della Ragion Pratica di Kant, Laterza, Roma-Bari, 2008;
- Sergio LANDUCCI, La Critica della Ragion Pratica di Kant. Introduzione alla lettura, La Nuova Italia Scientifica, Roma, 1993
