Prerequisites: No specific prerequisite required.
Target skills and knowledge: Basic knowledge of phonetics and phonologiy, morphology and syntax.
Baisc knowledge of the current theory of language.
Phonetic and Phonology: IPA table and transcription of Italian words, structure of the syllable, and syllabification of sentences (including sandhi phenomena).
Morphology: general knowledge of the theory of morphemes and words. Decomposition into morphemes of Italian words.
Syntax: basic knowledge of the thematic theory, verbal classes, tree structures in simple clauses.
Training to argumentative reasoning on the basis of linguistic processes.
Training to the usage of tests to demonstrate a hypothesis
Development of argumentative and logical abilities of the basis of empirical arguents.
Examination methods: Written test with open questions and exercises in phonology, morphology and syntax. A version of a mock exam is available on the moodle webpage of the course.
Assessment criteria: The marks are split between open questions and exercises. 1 point less for each mistaken in the exercises as well as in the open questions.
The exam tests also the general abilities acquired during the course.
Special modality of exams are foreseen for students with disabilities, please contact the professor responsible of the course.
For Erasmus students the exam will be formulated so as not to involve native competence of Italian (please contact the professor responsible for the course).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods: In addition to the lecture each session includes a question time by the students. A tutorial of 18 hours is foreseen for exercises in fonology, morfology and syntax.
The course offers a series of online materials (see moodle of the course) to favor selflearning. The moodle contains:a. slides of the course, b. class notes corresponding to the slides, c. exercises with a key for phonology, morphology and syntax. d. short videos of FAQ and basic notions. e. mock exam. f. reference texts.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The handbooks adopted in the course do NOT cover the whole material. It is advisable to download the slide and class notes and work on those. In case of contradictions, the version valid is the one of the slides and class notes.
