Prerequisites: B1 level (CEFR).
Target skills and knowledge: The aim of the course is to give students:
1) an awareness of the use of English as a global language and of the local varieties of English which cannot be ignored nowadays when communicating with people from different nationalities and cultures.
2) a better awareness of the appropriate register to be used both in writing and when speaking
3) a better understanding of how English is used by the mass media to communicate and how certain lexical-syntactic choices reflect on a specific slant
5) an understanding of how newspaper and magazine articles are written, by learning the necessary vocabulary in English
6) the right expressions to use when attending corporate or editorial meetings in English
7) the ability and development of skills to write a short text: a news article, an email with the right register or a press release
Examination methods: There is only one final written exam which lasts 90 minutes and is divided into two parts.
In the first part students need to answer approx. 70 questions (kind of exercises: multiple choice, gap filling, transformation, true/false, matching, open questions), to assess if they have acquired the necessary concepts from sections 1 to 6 of the previous section.
In order to evaluate the students’ written skills in English in section 7, in the second part students need to write a short news article, a blog post or a press release of 150 to 200 words given a headline or a specific situation.
Students cannot use any bilingual or monolingual dictionaries during the exam.
Assessment criteria: The marking will take into consideration these five areas:
- Task Fulfilment, e.g. whether or not you follow instructions and completed the task. Global Impression, e.g. how well the text reads; how it flows.
- Register, e.g. whether the language forms used are appropriate to the situation or task;
- Organisation/coherence / cohesion, e.g. how well the different parts of the text are connected;
- Use of Language, e.g. Grammatical range and accuracy / lexical resources grammar//spelling/punctuation
- Task completion as well as knowledge of the topics studied, and the socio-cultural background as related to the English encountered during the course.
Course unit contents: The course will cover the following topics:
1) English as a global language and the varieties of English in the world
2) the importance of register (formal and informal) and the origin of certain words used in English
3) introduction to the use of English as a communication means used by the mass media for pathos, drama, spectacularization. What newsworthiness is.
4) telling stories and events and attribution of sources. Direct and indirect speech, paraphrasing.
5) how to write the headlines of a news article and how to organize an article in English. Choice of lexis for a specific slant with examples of stories from newspapers from all over the world.
6) the richness of English. Neologisms and the creation of new words
7) language used in advertising and marketing, including the most common collocations and the use of slogans
8) use of slang. Politically correct language: the different types of politically correct and the most common words used.
9) magazines: magazine cover and the main elements of a magazine.
10) language for presentations
11) how to present for impact: content, language, possible situations and most common mistakes
12) how to organize and write a press release.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: All lessons are held in English
The course comprises classroom lessons as well as informal seminars (in English), workshops and student presentations.
During the lessons, and for homework, students will be involved in reading, comprehension and writing activities, as well as grammatical analysis and exercises.
Participants will be asked to participate in group work as well as individual activities.
A Moodle site is available to students.
