Prerequisites: Basic knowledge in Molecular Biology and Cellular Biology
Target skills and knowledge: Basic knowledge about function, structural and molecular characterization of prokaryotic microorganisms and viruses. Introduction to the different roles played by microorganisms, factors required to modulate their diffusion, growth and metabolic activity. Basic knowledge about methodologies applied in a laboratory of microbiology.
Examination methods: Written: quitz and open questions
Course unit contents: Bacteriology
Investigation methods in microbiology. Analysis of microbial morphology. Structure and function of the different bacterial cell components: cell wall, cytoplasmic membrane, cytoplasm and inclusion bodies, ribosomes, chromosome organisation, flagella, fimbriae, pili, capsule.
Bacterial life: nutrition, energetic metabolism and biosynthesis processes. Culture media and their utilization. Bacterial titration and analysis of their division both at cellular and population level. Factors influencing bacterial growth. Growth curves. Sporogenesis and spore germination. Brief analysis of microbial diversity. Biofilm. Quorum sensing.
Antimicrobial drugs: mechanism of action and their use. Analysis of the mechanisms of resistance to antimicrobial drugs. Sensibility assays to antimicrobial drugs. Methods of sterilization and disinfection.
Biological, physical and chemical properties of animal viruses. Structure of viruses. Classification. Virus/cell relationship. Replicative and transcriptional strategies. Bacteroophages and titration methodologies.
