Target skills and knowledge: Knowledge of principles and methods of the plant systematics and phylogeny, the classification systems, natural and artificial, the taxonomic ranks and features.
Knowledge of the organization of reproductive cycles of the main plant groups, their morphological characteristics and their importance for humans. Approach to knowledge of identification methods of families and species of the most common tracheophytes in Italy, the importance of herbaria and Botanical Gardens.
Examination methods: The acquired knowledge and skills acquired during the course will be verified through a written test organized in three parts:
a) 5 multiple-choice questions; b) 5 open questions, where a short answer is required; c) 2 open questions, where an extended answer is required. This test aims to evaluate both the knowledge and synthesis ability.
Assessment criteria: The student will be able to know the main concepts presented in the course and to have understood the topics, in particular the evolution of the photosynthetic organisms.
Course unit contents: Introduction to the systematics of plants.
Cyanobacteria: cell biology, reproduction, systematics and their ecological and evolutionary importance.
Endosymbiosis theory and origin of algae.
Algae: cell biology, morphology, metabolism, reproduction. Systematics and life cycles of the major groups. Phylogeny, ecology and uses.
Transfer from water to lands.
Embryophytes non-vascular plants: Bryophytes. Generalities and systematics. Morphology, features and life cycles. Origin and phylogeny.
Main taxa of the vascular plants.
Pteridophytes: vascular plants without seeds. Gametophyte, embryo, sporophyte features and reproductive cycles. Major groups and evolution. Phylogeny.
Spermatophytes: vascular plants with seeds, pollen and ovules. Life cycle. Systematics.
Gymnosperms: spermatophytes with nude ovules. Major taxa. Distribution and Phylogeny.
Angiosperms (flowering plants): Spermatophytes with ovules in an ovary. Evolution of flower and inflorescence. Pollination. Imcompatibility. Fruit and seed. Dissemination. Classification and major taxa of Angiosperms. Monocotyledons and Dicotyledons. Features of the major families. Phylogeny. Ecology and importance for human.
Heterothrophic eukaryots: Fungi. Myxomycota. Eumykota. Morphology, cell biology, metabolism and reproduction. Ecology and importance for human.
Mycorrhizas. Lichens.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course is organized in theoretical lectures and laboratory exercises to observe the plants.
