Prerequisites: Fundamentals of materials science, fundamentals of crystallography and crystal chemistry, general knowledge on the characterization techniques of the solid state, including diffraction by crystalline and amorphous solids.
Target skills and knowledge: The course wishes to offer:
1) a general overview of the historical use of materials, based on their physico-chemical and engineering properties, with special emphasis on building materials
2) overview of the crystallochemical and crystallographic properties of structural materials, binders and cements, and of the chemical reactions involved in their production, emplacement, and durability
3) description of some of the techniques employed in the characterization of complex materials
Examination methods: Final oral examination
Assessment criteria: Criteria for assessing the oral exam are: skills in the presentation of the subjects, the rigor and depth of the presentation, the critical attitute and the ability to link different topics.
Course unit contents: Classification and properties of industrial materials (metals, glass, binders, ceramics, etc.), with regards to building materials. Introduction to the historical use of materials.
In depth description of structural materials, binders, and cements (historical and modern):
- Chemical, crystal-chemical and structural properties of cement phases
- The hydration process in portland cement, mechanisms and kinetics
- Supplementary cementitious materials, geopolymers
- The use of organic admixtures in high performance cements: the organic-inorganic interaction
Special modules:
- The physico-chemical characterization of complex materials
- Solid state reaction kinetics
- Elements of crystal nucleation and growth
- Modeling of nucleation kinetics
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The main activity of the course will be classrom lectures.
The interaction with the students will be stimulated by questions and discussions, in the context of actual problems in applied research.
Laboratory activieties and hands-on tratment of data will be carried out, depending on the number of students.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Lecture notes, papers and reviews will be distributed.
