Prerequisites: Mathematics: differential and integral calculus.
Physics: basic concepts of mechanics, force, work, energy, SI units.
Basic concepts of general, inorganic and organic chemistry.
Target skills and knowledge: The aim of the course is to provide students with the concepts and methods of classical thermodynamics and chemical kinetics. At the end, students should be able to apply them to problems of physical and chemical interest.
Examination methods: The examination comprises a written and an oral part.
The written examination consists of 5 numerical exercises to be solved and can be replaced by partial tests during the term.
The oral exam has at least three questions, on topics treated during the course.
To be admitted to the written examination a student must pass the written test.
Assessment criteria: Student learning will be assessed according to the following criteria: understanding and mastering of the concepts and methods presented in the course, and capability to apply them in autonomous way.
Course unit contents: 1) State variable and functions.
2) Principles of thermodynamics.
3) Thermodynamic potentials, derivatives of state functions.
4) Thermodynamic properties of pure substances.
4) Phase equilibria in pure systems.
5) Thermodynamic properties of multi-component systems.
6) Dilute solutions and colligative properties.
7) Ionic solutions.
8) Galvanic cells and their thermodynamics.
9) Macroscopic description of chemical kinetics; reaction mechanism.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Classroom lectures using overhead projectors and blackboard. Hands-on participation of students will be encouraged, especially in problem-solving.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Teaching materials, including exercises and sample tests, will be made available to the students on the teachers website.
