Prerequisites: general knowledge on Mineralogy, Petrography, Sedimentary geology
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to give basic concepts on rock mechanics and deformation processes active at different depths inside the Earth. The student will learn recognizing and interpreting: (i) structures and rocks produced during the brittle and ductile deformations, (ii) structural associations at the outcrop and regional scales. In addition, the student will learn the insertion of the deformation processes within the global scheme of the plate tectonics.
Examination methods: Written exam: within three hours the student must replay to 12 of 14 questions, each corresponding to a different section of the booktext. The replay to question 3 (stereographic projection) is compulsary.
The maximum score of each question is 2.5 (2.5 x 12 = 30/30), the average time for each question is 15 minutes. The correct replay to all 14 questions scores 30/30 with honors (lode)
Assessment criteria: The evaluation considers the skill of the student in interpreting and representing by sketches/graphs the deformation structures indicating the various environmental, kinematic and dynamic conditions of formation.
Course unit contents: 1) Traction and stress (traction; second-order tensor; hydrostatic and deviatoric stress; principal stress axes; stress ellipsoid; Mohr circle).
2) Reference stress models in the lithosphere; Anderson's theory of faults.
3) Stereographic projections (Wullf and Schmidt) of planes and lines, diagrams for determining the axis of a cilindrical fold.
4) Deformation and strain (strain ellipse and ellipsoid, pure shear, simple shear).
5) Rheology of materials (elastic, plastic and viscous strain), rheology of the lithosphere.
6) Brittle failure (Mohr-Coulomb and Griffith criteria, frictional reactivation of the shear fractures).
7) Faults and fault rocks
8) Folds (morphological elements, geometric classifications, buckling of a single layer, bending, passive folding,).
9) Kinematic analysis of a fault population.
10) Regional extension systems.
11) Regional contraction systems.
12) Regional strike-slip systems.
13) Paleogene Extensional deformation in the western Veneto region.
14) Basic rules for the cross-section balancing
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course structures in frontal lessons (60 hours = 7.5 CFU) and practice exercise in classroom and in information tech laboratory (18 hours = 1.5 CFU). Exercises are stereographic plots of lines and planes, and kinematic and dynamic analyses of a fault population by using structural software.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The pdf files of the Power Point files used in classroom are available in the Moodle site of the course. These files represents a trace of the arguments developed during the lessons and, since they are mainly composed of figures, they can't replace the textbook.
