Prerequisites: Cell Biology and Istology; Plant Biology
Target skills and knowledge: Students will get used to observe and describe plants using the descriptive terminology of plant morphology, and some aspects of anatomy. They should be able to: state, define, and give examples of the components of taxonomy (description, identification, nomenclature, and classification); name, classify, and diagnose several of the major families of tracheophytes; collect (including properly recording field data), identify, and process a plant for an herbarium specimen. Students will get used to the principal concepts concerning the geographical distribution of plants (flora, vegetation, map of plant species distribution, life-forms, phytogeographic elements and provinces, ecological factors)
Examination methods: Students will be assessed for the above skills with an oral exam.
Each student will be required to collect a total of 100 plant species of Italian flora and properly process them for herbarium specimens. Students will submit a report of the fieldtrip.
Assessment criteria: Grading for exams will be based on:
-comprehension and knowledge of the topics
-ability to frame the main taxonomic groups in the history of plant evolution
-ability to recognize the most important distinctive features of the main taxonomic groups
-the herbarium richness and knowledge of the collected species.
Course unit contents: Plant Systematics
1) Introduction (1,5 CFU BIO 02)
What is Systematics?; Actual role of plant systematics in the emergency of plant biodiversity conservation; Aims of plant systematics: describe, identify, name, classify; Systematic evidences and relative descriptions concerning morphology, anatomy, embriology, palynology, reproductive biology; Methods.
Labs on the observation of the characteristics you look for identification of plant and their descriptive therminology (Leaf, Flowers, Inflorescence and Fruit)
2) Origin of plastid and diversity of photosynthetic eukariotes (1,5 CFU BIO 02)
Origin of photosynthetic eukariotes (Keeling, 2010) and revised classification of eukaryotes from Adl et al (2012); Basic concepts of Glaucophya, Rodophyceae, Stramenopila, Alveolata, Rhizaria; Cladogram of the Chloroplastida and important apomorphies. Basic concepts of Chlorophytes and Streptophytes (principal general and ultrastructural characters, life cycles).
3) Evolution and diversity of the first green and land plants (1CFU BIO 02)
Hypothesis on the origin of the land plants from algae; major adaptations that enabled formerly aquatic green plants to survive and reproduce in the absence of a surrounding water medium; Cladogram of the Embryophytes; First fossil evidence of land plants; Major apomorphies of mosses, liverworths and hornworths, principal and diagnostic features, life cycles. Lab of observation of the structural and reproductive feature of mosses and liverworths and recostruction of the key stages of their life cycles
4) Evolution and diversity of vascular plants (1 CFU BIO 02)
Cladogram of the Polysporangiomorha and major apomorphies; First fossil evidence (Protracheophytes, Rhyniophytes, Zosterophyllophytes, fossil Lycopodiophytes); Hypohesis on the origin of the branched sporophyte; Apomorphies of Lycopodiophytes; Principal and diagnostic characters of Lycopodiaceae, Selaginellaceae and Isoetaceae; Cladogram and major apomorphies of Euphyllophyta; Origin of euphylls; Apomorphies and diversity of Monilophyes; principal and diagnostic characters of Equisetopsida, Psilotopsida, Marattiopsida and Polypodiopsida.
5) Evolution and diversity of Woody and Seed plants (1 CFU BIO 02)
Apomorphies of Woody plants; General outline of the first woody plants Archeopteris and Pteridosperms; Cladogram and major apomorphies of the Seed Plants; Diversity of Gimnosperms, principal characters of Cycads, Gynkgo and Conifers.
6) Evolution and of Angiosperms (2 CFU BIO 02)
Cladogram and major apomorphies of Angiosperms; origin of the Angiosperm; Classification according to APG IV and apomorphies of the principal clades.
The topics 4), 5) and 6) include labs about identifying key characteristics of each of the principal Italian Flora families

GEOBOTANY (2,5 CFU lectures; 0,5 CFU field trip)
-Definition of flora and vegetation
-Factors controlling plants growth and fitness. Climatic factors: light, temperature, water availability. Edaphic factors: soil composition, nutrients, pH.
-Plant acclimation and adaptation to ecological factors.
-Plant life forms and RaunkiƦr's life form spectra
-Plant distribution ranges, ecological and historical factors. Chorology. Floristic kingdoms.
-Global factors influencing primary productivity. Vegetation index.
-Plant biomes.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course consists of:
-lectures (including PPTs, videos, conceptual maps on the blackboard, direct observation of plants)
-practicals to identify species of the principal Italian flora families by means of both classical and digital Keys
-exercises in the botanical garden/town to study morphological characters, identify common characters in mosses, liverworths, ferns, gimnosperms.
-a field trip.
Particular attention is devoted to improve student learning by means of Inquiry Based Science Education (IBSE) methods
