Prerequisites: Acquisition of Math and of General and inorganic chemistry courses.
As regards the former, be familiar with some mathematical functions that will be used throughout, such as logarithms and exponentials.
As regards the second, knowledge of the concept of element, compound, mole, atomic mass and molar, chemical equilibrium. Knowledge of simple inorganic compounds nomenclature. Ability to perform simple stoichiometric calculations and to balance the reaction equations correctly.
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to provide students with the conceptual means to rationalise and to understand the meaning of Chemical equilibria in aqueous solution with special reference to acid-base reactions, complex formation, redox and precipitation. It also provides the ability to perform quantitative chemical analysis conducted with "classic" methods included the prediction and evaluation and processing of the results with the aid of extensive laboratory activities.
Examination methods: The exam consists of a written and an oral test.

In the written test, the student must solve 3 exercises 3, respond to a section with true/false answer, respond to a section regarding questions about the laboratory activity.

In the oral examination the student will answer questions on theory but the work done in the laboratory will be also evaluated.
Assessment criteria: The final score is expressed in thirtieths, and is the average of the votes of the written and oral tests. The examination is passed only if both tests were passed with a score of at least 18/30.

As regards the assessment of the written test every exercise involves the acquisition of a score from 0 to 6 points.
Course unit contents: Classroom lessons.
Objectives and methods of analytical chemistry. Rationalisation of equilibria in solution by means of graphical methods: acid-base equilibria, complex formation of precipitation, redox potentials. Rigorous treatment for the purposes of the analytical applications. Volumetric analysis: theoretical treatment of titration curves based on different types of balances. Detection methods of end point.
Laboratory activities using simple lab equipment: calibrated glassware and not, technical and analytic balance, pH-meter, stove, muffle.
Acid-base titrations, complex formation, redox, precipitation. Potenziometriche titrations and indicator. Gravimetric analysis. Calibration. Laboratory notebook. Statistical analysis of the experimental results.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Alongside the mathematic ratinalization of solution equilibria and related topics, learning will be facilitated through the graphical analysis by means of logarithmic diagrams.
In laboratory, learning is facilitated by the presence of numerous professional figures alongside the teacher.
Additional notes about suggested reading: For each activity will be provided adequate teaching material in the form of recommended books, handouts, power point presentations but also in multimedia format using the potential of institutional websites.
