Prerequisites: Knowledge of the fundamentals provided by the course of Organic Chemistry I and in particular: structure, nomenclature and properties of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, halides, alcohols and ethers; elements of stereochemistry; nucleophilic substitutions and eliminations.
Target skills and knowledge: Completion of the basic preparation provided by the Organic Chemistry course I about the characteristics and properties of the mono-functional organic compounds. Through the study of the main classes of reactions of organic compounds the student will be able to predict the reactivity of an organic molecule and propose synthetic strategies of the studied compounds. Basic notions on some polyfunctional organic molecules (phospholipids, amino acids, carbohydrates and nucleotides) will also be provided. They are a useful introduction to the study of the biological chemistry.
Examination methods: The student can choose two examination methods:
A) two written tests, one at half course and a second at the end of the lessons. Each test contains 10 multiple choice questions and 10 open questions. The second test includes 4-5 questions on the laboratory experiments. The final grade is given by the average of the two tests plus a possible increase (1-2 points) depending upon the laboratory activity and the related reports.
B) Oral exam in the official exam sessions. The score takes into account the laboratory activity and the related reports.
Assessment criteria: The ability to
(i) recognize and distinguish the different classes of organic compounds,
(ii) derive the properties of a molecule by analyzing its chemical structure,
(iii) apply the reactions learned to multi-step organic syntheses.
Course unit contents: Aromaticity, electrophilic aromatic substitutions, effects of activation and orientation.
Nucleophilic aromatic substitutions. Reactions of the carboxylic acids.
Derivatives of carboxylic acids and their reactions. IV CFU - Reactivity of aldehydes and ketones.
Organic chemistry of carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids, proteins and nucleic acids.

Organic chemistry laboratory.
- Safety regulations in chemistry laboratories and use of laboratory equipment.
- Synthesis of organic compounds.
- Separation techniques and characterization: crystallization and determination of the melting point; extraction techniques of organic compounds, extraction of acid and base; chromatographic separations; choice of the eluent, thin layer chromatography and column chromatography.

Exercises on the topics of the course will be also carried out before the two written tests.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course encompasees 48 hours of lectures and 48 hours of laboratory exercises. In the classroom lessons, the use of the blackboard will be preferred. However, the electronic files used in some lessons will be provided to the students.
The experiments conducted in the laboratory will allow the student to know the properties of the organic molecules and to put into practice some of the reactions studied in the classroom lessons.
Additional notes about suggested reading: It is highly recommended to study in an organic chemistry book. The notes taken in the classroom will allow the student to immediately verify the degree of understanding of the subject.
All files used in the classroom and the teaching material related to the laboratory experiences will be made available on the Moodle platform.
