Target skills and knowledge:

Knowledge of the methods of quantum mechanics.
Knowledge of the quantum mechanical description of atoms and molecules, and of their properties.
Capability of evaluating quantum mechanical properties of model systems.
Capability of interpreting experimental observables according to molecular properties. 
Examination methods:

Written examination (replaceable by partial written examinations during the course) and oral examination 
Assessment criteria:

Knowledge of physical chemistry methods for the description of molecula systems and their properties.
Capability of applying physical chemistry methods to specific molecular systems 
Course unit contents:

METHODS OF QUANTUM MECHANICS:
Summary of the classical mechanics principles, inconsistencies of a classical descriptions of atoms and molecules.
The principles of quantum mechanics: wavefunction, operators and observables, expectation values of obsevables, probabilistic interpretation of measurements of quantum systems.
The Hamiltonian operator, the time dependent Schroedinger equation and its solutions.
Quantum mechanical description of the translational, vibrational and rotational motion with reference to model systems.
Properties of angular momentum operators and spherical harmonics.
Interaction with elctromagnetic radiations and transition moments.
STRUCTURE AND PROPERTIES OF ATOMS:
Structure of the hydrogen atom and of oneelectron atoms.
Electron and nuclear spin, magnetic properties.
Atoms with several electrons. Electronic configurations. The Pauli exclusion principle and the symmetry of the electronic wavefunction.
Multiplet structure of excitations spectra and spectroscopic selection rules.
STRUCTURE AND PROPERTIES OF MOLECULES:
The molecular ion H2+. The Hydrogen molecule.
Biatomic molecules. Molecules with several atoms.
Approximation methods of solution of the Schroedinger equation. The variational method, The selfconsistentfield method of HartreeFock. The Huckel approximation.
Molecular symmetries, symmetry groups and their representations, the use of character tables.
