Prerequisites: Basic calculus. General Physics I.
Target skills and knowledge: Knowledge of fundamental notions of electromagnetism and optics, and their application to the solution of typical exercises.
Examination methods: The exam consists in a written test and in an oral exam after having passed the written one with at least 18/30.
Assessment criteria: Written verification of the skills in applying the laws of physics to solve practical problems.
Oral exam for testing the comprehension of the foundations of physics.
Course unit contents: Electricity, charges and electrical current. Coulomb's law. Electric field. Electric potential of a single charge and of a charge distribution. Electric dipole. Induction. Conductors, insulants. Gauss' law. Capacitors. Dielectrics. Currents. Ohm's law. Joule's law. RC Circuits. Magnetism. Magnetic field. Biot and Savart's law. Lorentz' force. Coil. Magnetic dipole moment. Ampere's law. Electromagnetism. Faraday's law. Inductance. Magnetic properties of matter: paramagnetism, diamagnetism, ferromagnetism. Electromagnetically induced fields. Maxwell's laws for electromagnetism. Waves and optics. Mechanical waves: concept of oscillatory field, longitudinal and transverse waves. SOlution of mawell eq. in vacuum. Snell's law. Transmission and reflection. Total reflection.
