Syllabus
Prerequisites: None
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims at providing the students with basic as well as specialized notions on safety in chemical laboratories.
Examination methods: A suitability assessment will be released based on passing online tests and attendance at the seminars.
Assessment criteria: The level of understanding and assimilation of the topics will be evaluated. The student is expected to be able to apply the safety notions to the every day life of a chemical laboratory.
Course unit contents: Security concepts, structure and security management, fire prevention. Security in a chemical laboratory. Reactivity and flammability of chemicals. Chemical risk: labelling, symbology and risk phrases; dose-response, acute and chronic toxicity, exposure monitoring and effects. Electrical hazard.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course is delivered through lectures, held by experts in the field, using slides.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The material used in class will be made available to the students at the beginning of the lectures. In addition, a booklet on safety and prevention (provided by the Prevention, Protection, Safety and Environment Service of the University) will be distributed.
