Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basics of physics, chemistry, trigonometry and geography.
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to provide a common cultural base on unifying concepts of Geological Sciences. The concepts presented will allow the student to understand the history and evolution of Planet Earth, the evolution of terrestrial processes related to endogenous and exogenous dynamics and the formation of geographical landscapes. The aim of the course is also to provide the tools to understand the geological and geomorphological hazards, the skills of Earth Sciences required in the environmental field (in order to coordinate/consult the professional specialists) and be able to broadly interpret specific thematic maps.

Course unit contents: THE CELESTIAL ENVIRONMENT (0.25 CFU)
Stars, galaxies, solar system, planets
THE PLANET EARTH (0.50 CFU)
Shape of the Earth, the geoid, coordinates, motions of the Earth.
THE MOON (0.25 CFU)
Composition, movements, lunar phases and eclipses.
THE TERRESTRIAL ATMOSPHERE AND METEOROLOGICAL PHENOMENA (0.75 CFU)
Composition, subdivision limits of the atmosphere. Troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, exosphere.Heat balance of the Earth system. Greenhouse effect.
The air temperature.
The atmospheric pressure and wind. Collection of barometric data, their representation.
General circulation of the atmosphere.
The humidity and precipitation. Mode of precipitation: orographic, Continental, warm fronts, cold, occluded.Precipitation data collection, processing and their representation.
Weather.Cyclones and tornadoes. Weather conditions in Europe.
THE CLIMATE (0.50 CFU)
Climates and rocks. Outline of the factors of soil formation. The processes of weathering of rocks.
The classification and distribution of climates. Notes on climatic types in the world. The climates of the Italian territory.
THE PLATE TECTONICS (1 CFU)
Interior of the earth. Crust, mantle, core. Heat flow.Earth's magnetic field. Paleomagnetism.
The structure of the crust. Oceanic crust and continental crust. Plate and margins. Constructive (divergent), convergent (destructive) and collisional margins. Orogeny and the opening of an ocean.
THE VOLCANISM (0.75 CFU)
Volcanic edifices and products of volcanic eruptions.Distribution of volcanoes in Italy and in the world.
THE DEFORMATION OF ROCKS (1.25 CFU)
Stratigraphy and tectonics. The principles of stratigraphy. Environments and facies. Transgressions, regressions, gaps.
Elements of tectonic deformation of rocks, faults, folds, thrust faults and nappe.
Geological maps.
THE EARTH'S CRUST: MINERALS AND ROCKS (2 CFU)
The minerals. Crystal structure, physical properties, formation.
Igneous rocks. Classification.
The sedimentary rocks. Clastic rocks and debris. Organogenic rocks. Rocks of chemical origin.
The metamorphic rocks. Contact metamorphism. Regional metamorphism.
THE MARINE HYDROSPHERE (0.25 CFU)
The seabed. The hypsographic curve. The chemical and physical characteristics of marine waters.
The movements of the sea. Causes and periodic rhythms of the tides. The marine currents.
THE CONTINENTAL HYDROSPHERE (0.50 CFU)
The water cycle. Water resources of the planet.Permanent snow, ice and glaciers. Glacier dynamics and their current extension.Superficial waters. Meteoric and river runoff.Lakes.
THE GEOMORPHOLOGY OF CONTINENTAL LANDS (1 CFU)
The weathering.
Forms of gravitational accumulation. The landslides.
Areal and linear erosion. Longitudinal profile of a water course. The forms of deposit and erosion.
The action of the water.
The geomorphic action of glaciers.
The action of the sea on the coast.
THE REPRESENTATION OF LAND SURFACE (1 CFU)
Cartographic representations.
The scale of the maps.
Classification of maps.
Geographical projections.
The construction of maps.
The representation of the relief.
The topographic map of Italy. The Italian IGM cartography. The Italian cartographic production. References to the Regional Technical Map (CTR).
Reading, use of maps.
