Syllabus
Prerequisites: The knowledge acquired in Fundamental Psychology and Developmental Psychology courses will be helpful for understanding this course.
Target skills and knowledge: The student will acquire the basic knowledge of Dynamic Psychology as a model of mental functioning. In particular will have to know the fundamentals of Freudian thought and the contributions of the main authors to post Freudian psychoanalytic model, with particular reference to the theories of mentalization processes. Will then have acquired the basic concepts of psychoanalytic diagnosis based, specifically, on knowledge of defense mechanisms.
Examination methods: The exam is written. It is composed by four open-ended questions (also in English Language) on two required texts and on the text of your choice. The exam will last for 120 minutes.
Assessment criteria: The evaluation will be based on student’s ability to develop the topics of the questions precisely and completely, also showing –though concisely- his/her own personal knowledge and critical thinking skills, with the possibility of laud whereas the teacher notices particular originality and competency.
Course unit contents: 1)The Freudian meta-psychology idea following the topical, economic, dynamic and structural point of views. The Ego Development and Functions. Anguish, Conflict and Defence Mechanisms issues. The genetic point of view: the libido phases. Narcissism. Mourning and Melancholy. The Life and Death drives.
2)Child Psychology, Separation-Individuation and Attachment Theory (A. Freud, M. Mahler, R. Spitz, J. Bowlby, H.D. Stern.Further developments of the Drives and the Object Relation Theories focussing on a selection of post Freudian authors (M. Klein e D.W. Winnicott, W.R.Bion, O.Kernberg).
3)Psychoanalytic Diagnosis Issues: defense mechanisms
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: - Frontal lectures concern topics in program that the student will deepen through the study of textbooks.
- Active participation of students with comments and questions is expected
-In the context of lessons, integrative seminars of external experts on specific topics are expected.
- Attending students will receive, during the lessons, signs of a mode of exam preparation that takes account of classroom teaching.
