Prerequisites: Some links with social psychology and methodology of psychosocial research will be underlined. For the course it is important a good use of the personal computer and internet.
Target skills and knowledge: The main aim of the course is to provide students with the theoretical, conceptual and methodological instruments in order to better understand and analyze the processes by which the social communication influences judgments, decisions and human conducts. Topics covered in this course are mainly focused on the mechanisms of persuasion and the analysis of the influence of the means of mass communication.
Examination methods: The exam will be written with 8 open questions. It will take 40 minutes.
Assessment criteria: The assessment of the preparation of the students will be based both on the knowledge and understanding of the main topics, and on the acquisition of issues and proposed methodologies. There will be also a distinction between attending and non-attending students. For attending students, the active participation in some of the activities proposed during the course will also be taken into consideration during the evaluation phase.
Course unit contents: The study of communication as a process.
Language, meaning and messages.
The interpersonal communication.
Mass-communication: individual and social effects.
Nonverbal communication.
Some elements of political communication and their effects.
Internet and persuasive communication.
Stereotypes in communication and objectification of women.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Every week the teacher will upload in the website of the course a presentation of the main topics of the week. Video documents or other materials will also be suggested for discussion. The attending students will be involved in a research experience connected with the topics of the course.
Additional notes about suggested reading: International students can ask for material in English. There is also the possibility for these students to take the written exam in English.
