Prerequisites: As prerequisites are required only general knowledge about the psychology and the social sciences.
Target skills and knowledge: The objective of the course is to provide the student with a key to interpreting the main themes of psychological intervention in the work world, describing its constructs, theories and methods of investigation. Starting from the historical foundations of Work and Organizational Psychology, the professional role of work psychologists in the current socio-economic context, characterized by continuous transformations and changes, will be presented and discussed,.
The student shall develop critical and interpretative skills needed to reflect on the themes that characterize the relationship among people-work-organizations and more generally on social themes (for example, unemployment, outplacement and difficulty).
Applying the skills learned, being able to adequately formulate the phases of processes, knowing how to clearly and effectively communicate, using the correct terminology of the sector with both specialists and nonprofessionals.
At the end of the course the student is expected to have gained the basic skills in order to take the “first steps” in this intervention sector (which they will start to put into practice during the academic internship), to be able to autonomously further explore what he or she has learned, to use the basic knowledge as a starting “platform” in order to reach a broader judgement autonomy.
Examination methods: The exam will written. The student will be asked to answer 6 open questions in an hour and a half. The questions will deal with the main themes analyzed in the course; students may be asked to discuss a theory (for example, organizational or motivational theories), to compare interpretative approaches, to report the main contributions of an author, or to describe the phases of intervention processes within organizations (for example, personnel selection).
Assessment criteria: The evaluation criteria can be summarized in the following:
- the correctness, accuracy and completeness of the response (ex. indicating the main authors’ names, presenting models and methods), the use and property of the terminology of the sector.
Answers can also be given in an outline form, but they must prove to be the result of the student’s revision.
Course unit contents: The course will develop the following contents:
- the role of the work psychologist: the characteristics of the profession, work at a company and/or consultancy firm. The peculiarities of such a figure in HR management
- the main applicative sectors: from scholastic to professional orientation, from selection to training, as well as the analysis of specific fields of intervention, for example: organizational climate, satisfaction at work
- historical evolution and organizational context: characteristics of the work world, organizational theories and their evolution, from the legislative to the diagnostic approach
- the methods and tools of work psychology: buildings scales and questionnaires, applying tests
- the person-work relationship: the work world, meaning, centrality, importance, involvement in work. The contribution of positive psychology
- motivation and satisfaction: from classic theories to psychological capital
- organizational climate and culture: definition, interpretive models and research tools
- the socialization process at work: from the role of the family and school to insertion in the organizational context
- unease in organizations: from fatigue to alienation, anomie and frustration; from stress to burnout and mobbing. The main theories and interpretive models, analyses of consequences for the individual, the organization and society as a whole. Possible interventions.
- work and private life: from workaholism (the new behavioral dependencies and the consequences for the individual and the organization) to work life balance (the traditional models, from the prospect of balance to that of integration, reconciliation initiatives)
- outplacement: from losing a job to professional outplacement
- the personnel selection process: phases and tools
- the personnel training process: phases, methods, training figures
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course will consist of video lessons, training activities and forums.
The video lessons aim to present and further explore the topics set forth in the program, as well as the historic-social-economic contextualization of the main organizational theories.
Case studies, videos and accounts will be provided for discussion, as occasions to develop and apply one’s analytical and judgement skills and to work in groups.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The student will have all the slides presented in the video lessons.
The slides will allow students to explore some topics in depth and to have outlines or summaries of the main subjects dealt with available.
