Prerequisites: Requirements include basic knowledge of physics, mathematics and chemistry as specified in the School of Psychology enrolling requirements. In particular to follow this course students require a sufficient knowledge of cell biology, genetics and principle of biological involution
Target skills and knowledge: The aim of the first part of the course is to provide students with background on anatomy and physiology of nervous and endocrine systems. This knowledge will be used in the second part of the course to understand the biological bases of mental processes
Examination methods: The written exam consists in a series of questions (open question, multiple choice questions, or anatomy tables/illustrations to denominate), which the students are required to answer in about45 mins.
Assessment criteria: The written test consists of 40 questions divided into four sections. They are selected to cover all the topics of the program
In particular, they are intended to assess:
Knowledge and appropriate use of the terminology of the discipline.
Ability to recognize the main anatomical structures that make up the nervous system and the endocrine system
Understanding of the physiological mechanisms which are based on the electrical properties of the cell and neuronal transmission of nerve impulses in the synapses.
Knowledge of the neural structures involved in different cognitive and neural mechanisms that underlie it
Understanding of the adaptive significance of human behavior and the processes through it evolved

There are penalties for incorrect answers.
Course unit contents: First part
- Anatomy of nervous system
- Physiology of nervous cells
- Action potential, synaptic transmission and neural circuits
- Autonomic nervous system, chemical communication, endocrine system

Second part
- Natural selection and the evolution of behaviour
- Evolution of nervous system in vertebrates
- Psychobiology of cognitive processes (memory, language, attention)
- Psychobiology of emotions; biological aspects of mental illness
- Introduction to sensory system. The visual system
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: This is a distance learning course. Online lecture videos from the teacher will be available
