Target skills and knowledge: The Dynamic Psychology is comprised of various theories and models, rooted in psychoanalytic knowledge. The course aims at introducing the students to:
1) the main classical Freudian psychoanalytic concepts;
2) the main post-Freudian psychoanalytic currents;
3) other major psychodynamic theories, in particular Transactional Analysis
4) the main lines of development of empirical research in support of psychodynamic theories and therapies.
The course aims to develop the ability to trace the phenomena behind some psychodynamic theories, refining the critical capacity to differentiate between different phenomena described with the same concepts, and recognize the same phenomena described by different concepts.
Examination methods: The exam is written and includes 21 multiple choice questions on the entire program, and an open question on the development of psychodynamic theory.
Assessment criteria: The written examination includes open and/or multiple choice questions, which aim to assess the learning of concepts and theories presented in the lessons and knowledge of the bibliography.
The oral exam aims to test knowledge of the entire bibliography (option 1 or option 2).
Course unit contents: 1) Classical Freudian psychoanalytic concepts
First phase: 1895-1910
Studies on hysteria (first theory of trauma)
Psychoanalytic nosology (psychoneurosis and actual neurosis)
The dream (first topic, the first theory of anxiety)
The Theory of Sexuality (drive theory, psychosexual development -oral, anal, phallic and genital phases, positive Oedipus complex)
Second phase: 1911-1920
Psychosis (primitive defense mechanisms)
Psychoanalytic technique (negative and positive transference, countertransference)
Narcissism (libido, object choices, stages of psychosexual development, ego ideal)
Metapsychology (first topic, first drive theory, defense mechanisms; dynamic, topical, economic and genetic points of view)
Third phase: 1920-1939
Second drive theory, second topic, second theory of anxiety
2) The most remarkable post-Freudian psychoanalytic currents
Ego Psychology: adaptation and defenses;
Object relations Psychology: internal objects, fantasies, paranoid-schizoid and depressive positions, primitive defenses, projective identification and countertransference;
Psychology of the Self: Self and self-object experiences, idealization and de-idealization, self development, transfer of self-object ; mirroring, idealizing, and twinship self-object transferences.
Relational currents in psychoanalysis.
3) Other psychodynamic theories: Transactional Analysis
The psychoanalytic roots of transactional analysis, the psychodynamic model of ego states; transactional analysis proper, games and life script analysis.
Principles of psychopathology, diagnosis and treatment of ego states.
Recent theoretical currents in Transactional Analysis.
4) The development of empirical research in the field of Dynamic Psychology.
Research designs tailored for the clinical practice: randomized clinical trials and single case research. The efficacy evidences of psychodynamic psychotherapy. Neural models of psychodynamic concepts and therapy. Search Tools.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course is based on lectures, fostering the active participation of students.
Students are invited to read the chapters mentioned in each class for the next lesson and to participate with own critics and comments.
Case studies are presented for illustrating the main theoretical concepts.
Participants will be presented with the result of an international research project for the recognition of transactional analysis as an empirically supported treatment.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Option 1: "Reading Freud" (210 pages): "The psychoanalytic diagnosis" (280), "The research-based psychodynamic psychotherapy" (240), "Transactional Analysis and psychotherapy" (120) and "recent currents of transactional analysis" (115) are the main bibliography and provide an overview of the dynamic psychology, psychodynamic psychotherapy and developments of modern research in psychodynamic psychotherapy. It also allows students to deepen one of the largest psychodynamic model, i.e. transactional analysis.
Option 2: Alternatively, students can choose the two texts "Lessons on Freudian thought" (300) and "Lessons on post Freudian thought" (380), which deepen in an exemplary way the psychoanalytic model.
